Bowen Therapy helps to ease pain, restore balance and promote general wellbeing. It is a gentle but precise soft tissue manipulation. Appropriate for all ages, including babies.

What is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen Therapy is a gentle bodywork designed to treat injuries and balance the body. Areas of muscle tension and skeletal imbalance are identified and treated with specific moves, with the aim to reduce pain, inflammation, and increase range of movement and flexibility.

A Bowen treatment involves direct moves over muscles, tendons, fascia, ligaments, and joints. It is both subtle and dynamic in its influence on the body’s health and wellbeing.

What should I expect?

A treatment is usually 45-60 minutes. It consists of a series of stretches over muscles, which are held for a few seconds before the move is performed. Frequent pauses throughout the session are essential, and allow the body time to integrate and respond to the release of tension and begin the healing process. The treatment can be performed on skin or through light clothing and is appropriate for all ages.

Most importantly, you will feel secure and able to relax fully. A Bowen treatment initiates changes in your body that can continue for several days. Waiting at least 5 days before having other physical therapies allows you to get the most from the treatment and will give a clearer indication of how your body responds to this modality.

Origins of Bowen Therapy

Tom Bowen, a Geelong man, developed the original treatment we call “Bowen Therapy” during the 1950’s and 60’s and continued to work until his death in 1982. His technique has since been taught and practised in over 30 countries worldwide. He was a highly respected and original body worker whose legacy and healing ability continue to be remembered long after his death.
